New Year! What now?

Happy New Year everyone! It’s 2012 and everybody as always happens is excited at the prospects of the days and months to come. In this year of the dragon what will we being doing differently to make this year successful? You’re going to make resolutions? Good for you? But what does that mean? Does it mean you make a list, get all worked up and weeks later go back to life as usual?

Year after year I try to set goals that will enhance my life even in small ways. This year is no different with a 13 goal spread (plus a few left from last year). This obsession started in 2006 when I set a list of 153 goals to do by the end of the year which I did accomplish. The excitement of that and the inspiration from reading Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People pushed me to make it a yearly ritual.

After doing it for some time I started to hone in on things that were really important to me and breaking those down into sub goals. Things like spiritual growth, health, career, and travel after a couple of years of building goal lists were separated and then broken down into accomplishable tasks.  I stayed as realistic as possible with my goals  as they were all based on bigger goals based on a five year plan.

This year starts the beginning of a new five years and I’m excited.  Even though my last five years were mixed because of unforeseen problems (like business endeavours getting robbed or extorted and world economy going to crap) I still am impressed by what was accomplished and I’m definitely looking to do it bigger this time.

As I mentioned before I have thirteen goals this year. I’ll share a few with you as I close this blog. One of my fitness goals is to run a 5K marathon in the summer or fall of this year. This means training starts now. Another goal in terms of my career is to get a job in Canada which utilizes all of the experience and skill I garnered while in Jamaica.  One of my spiritual goals is to spend time in the New Testament covering the letters to the churches and how it applies to me.

I”m excited and hope all those who have set resolutions or goals may move toward them with excitement and fervour.  I also did get a life goal done this year. On my bucket list I had to go to a hockey game and was given that chance this past week. Yes!

Looking forward to your feedback. Stay strong and focused!

Note : Check out my trip to the Hockey Game 😉

Avalanche?

It’s been a while since I last blogged. It may be the longest since I started blogging again. I want to say that in my mind I’ve written a thousand blogs but never got a chance to put it on my internet blog. So much to tell you all but so little time.

I’ve been so busy with school that the only time I do remember about writing is on the bus to class. It will improve I promise. I have exams and tests and group assignments this week so I’ll call this entry a filler. i do want to say before i post a video and some pics of my beautiful country that the experience so far has been wonderful.  The opportunities glisten in front of your eyes but right now I’m staying focused on getting my PMP (Project Management Certification) and see what happens after that God willing.

So until next week…

Peace

Side Note ; While writing this I heard one of the most forward thinking persons of this generation died. Rest in Peace Steve Jobs till that day!  Your legacy will continue.

A Whole New World

I don’t like reading long blogs so I’ll try to keep this 500 words or less. Don’t want to dish out what I don’t like so here goes…

I decided to go to Canada for school because of basically being disillusioned by what I left behind. After trying over and over I decided to set a new foundation and God has opened the doors so now I’m enrolling in a post grad course in Project Management and plan to use it for a spring board into a world of possibilities.

I landed last week and became overwhelmed the minute I left the airport.  Now 7 days later I still am being culture shocked around every corner. I was laughing to myself yesterday is culture shock what Jamaican people called “frigthen fa”?  Well if is let the frigth begin. I haven’t been out of Jamaica since I started high school and that was the US and Canada is totally different from what I remember of their close neigbors America.

But like America though they do everything big and maybe i thought to myself if the islands copied some of their architectural ideas we could use less space for more but that’s another blog.

I could sum it up in one word. It’s civilized. Everything in total order. I dropped right in the lap of a very sweet Jamaican who I call Aunt Joyce. I feel so at home that It’s not till I leave the house in the days and look around I realize, “no boss, yu nuh deh a yaad again”. Shopping of course is great but great just in the fact that if you want something you can find it but not in the price factor. I remember going into a store for a hair brush and seeing 24.95 and literally running away saying “Chiney shop have dis fi 150 Ja”.

The whole experience with food has been interesting so far. I’ve had many an indian dish as well as local pizza and yes even KFC (which I will just say want more seasoning).  The Indian food is great but spicy. There was a one pot dish called Chicken Biryani and Haan as well a Greek dish (I think it was called cous cous). Interesting to say the least. As time goes by and I happen to get a job on campus best believe I’ll be trying more whether it sends me to the bathroom or not 🙂

I’ve also found a church where I feel comfortable. God is good. Aunt Joyce goes to that church and after meeting everyone I have to say I’m impressed. Everyone is nice and open and it feels like home. Went to the men’s meeting last night and am glad i have brothers here with which i can share and understand certain things. Again, God is good.

Speaking of the people, compared to the aggressive nature that seems to be ingrained in most of our people back home it is a refreshing change. Everyone I’ve met is nice and accommodating but this seems to be the lifestyle of the people, enjoying life and what it has to offer without the “don’t get in my way mentality”. I am either dreaming and if I am I pray it doesn’t turn into a nightmare.

Being here has been fun so far with every step being an adventure.  Hopefully I’ll have the time once school starts to let you know what else I am gong to be up to. Thanking God for guidance so far and praying for continuous help from Him.

Peace.

Below is my first vid on my youtube channel since being here….

Fitness, Looking Good and the Summer Body

The summer has started and with it the need to be ready for the beach, the party, the barbeque and the pool.  A big part of being ready involves the SUMMER BODY.  There is always that “itch” to look your best for the summer for which people storm gyms, start home workout programs, get into walking and running regimines and inhumane diets.

I too am feeling the need to scratch the itch and scratching I am.  But i want to go beyond the summer and I know a lot of people feel the same.  I want to make it a part of my life’s trek.  Earlier this year I created my life’ goals (different from my bucket list) and one of the goals is to die fit so I’m using this “itch” to get me started.

I did my research and decided to work out from home using a range of workouts to be done daily.  This is what it came down to after checking discussion boards, youtubing and listening to people’s experiences.

  1. Insanity Workouts – I decided to do insanity after doing test workouts with both insanity and P90X. P90X requires weights and other accessories and even though I have weights too much improvisation would have to be done and insanity requires none so that for me was a no-brainer.
  2. Walking – This I do only once a week and its usually leisurely walking but still works as i go walking up to 30 minutes to an hour each time.  Nothing like a good walk where you can take some pics….
  3. Pushup/Pullups/Situps – I had 3 goals this yr to do a certain number of each.  I have already hit the 200 situps goal which now I do everyday.  The pushups have been hard and at this point I can do in the 30s off the bat and then finish with 20 each set after… my gaol is to do 100 without stopping.  For pull-ups my goal is only 20 of which i have done 3 so far.  Yes, three! Yeah i know but lifting 200 pounds on a 6ft 3 frame isn’t easy.  Below are the workouts I use for all three…               http://hundredpushups.com/ – PUSHUPS                                                                     http://www.twohundredsitups.com/ – SITUPS                                                             http://www.twentyfivepullups.com/ – PULLUPS
  4. Free Weights – I use them every other day and alternate them with my pushups/pullups/situps workouts.
  5. Diet – Insanity says I shoudl eat 5 times a day so I haven’t changed my eating habits.  Whether light or heavy I eat five times a day while trying to drink as much water as possible.  I haven;t eaten KFC anytime this year but BK has its hooks in me. My cravings for those are REAL!  I’ll tell you about that in another blog.  If i lived in Kingston, I know Pizza Hut would see me often too. Use to drive to Kgn. Just for that but anyways….
I have been doing insanity for two weeks now and the rest a little
longer. I try to rest on weekends and might just play basketball or run on weekends.  I have set two goals as far as these two activities for the summer. To run 13 seconds in the 100M (that would make me the 123,987th fastest Jamaican on the planet) and dunk a basketball again (which I haven’t done since college).
I don’t have a before pic but just took a pic of my progress so far. I have made progress since starting insanity because I had a little jiggle and now its gone (TMI moment).  I’ll definitely have a video of my first attempt to dunk and my first attempt to beat the 13 seconds.  If anybody else is on a similar trek let us compare notes.
Peace.

Road Trip to Dover (CMRC Meet)

Dover! How I love the sounds of the engines and the screams of the masses as tyres squeal around sharp turns.  The excitement of Dover.

   (Easter Meet VloG)

I won’t waste any time but to say that after my last experience with Dover I was excited to go back minus having to contend with the traffic I had to deal with at the Easter meet.  Had to sit there in traffic, after leaving early (around 2) and didn’t get to the main road until minutes to five…

But the draw of the CMRC meet was too much to handle. I had to see the match ups and not second hand either.  So off we went on Labor Day heading to St. Ann from Mandeville.  We were all hoping to get some roasted yam on the way through Clarendon but everywhere we passed wasn’t ready for the Dover crowd.  Itz like they already made their millions so who cares if all these cars passing wanted yam or not.   We weren’t amused.  After about two hours and about a hundred potholes we finally got there and immediately sought food.  Jah know… a who tell we nuh fi carry foood..   all prices double up…

I’m saying this right now!!!! NEVER AGAIN will i go to Dover without carrying foood.  NEVER!!!!

We got there early so we saw the intro of the drivers as well as the ceremony.

(lots of footage here) http://www.youtube.com/user/ainsleydacres

It was a good day with lots of activities and the races were hype.  The anticipated match ups did not disappoint either.  My fave racer David The king made sure to show them who was boss and all the racers did well.  Big up SeaBoard for the sponsorship of the event.  Keeping racing alive means alot to many Jamaicans.

At the end of the day the thought of long waits in traffic lingered but this time it only took about 50 minutes to an hour to exit because of the new exits and the control of the authotiries.  So no sour points this time to mention at all.

Well okay..  there was one… the YAM!!!!.. Even on our way back they had run out so they actually catered for those who left real early or reached late…  Maybe I need to open a yam stand on public holidays.  Show them how itz dun…

Well other than that I can’t wait to do it all over again.
